ABSTRACT

Many elementary school teachers end up teaching multiple subjects outside their comfort zone. It is challenging to bring science to the students, and geology is a wonderful subject to bring into the classroom. Geology is the study of the earth and earth processes that includes a wide range of fields including biology, astronomy, and physics. Geology encompasses other academic fields such as mathematics, language arts, and a variety of the natural sciences. In Enriching the Young Naturalist: The Nature of a Science Classroom, Jeff Danielian recommends allowing students time to explore their interest base within natural settings. Many students have a first encounter with geology through their interest in dinosaurs; this can be a natural launching pad for an introduction to geology. Many students are also fascinated by volcanoes, which are easy to discuss and recreate in the classroom.
