ABSTRACT

Christian Buck and his family were planning an international move. When he and his father went online and explored possibilities for international schools he might attend while living in Germany, he came upon a school playground with a designated bench for friendship. Christian’s family ended up not moving; however, he was inspired to make a change in his school. He approached Matthew Miller, the principal of his elementary school in York, PA, with his idea for a “buddy bench.” Christian’s story reminds educators to become aware of characteristics that are often evident in the social and emotional development of gifted children. Sensitivity is a depth of feeling that enables children to identify with others. Such sensitivity influences their daily experiences. Children like Christian cannot stand to see others suffering and are highly aware of the needs and emotions of others. Christian’s story reminds educators of the value of classroom projects involving reaching out to others in need.
