ABSTRACT

This case study examines how fostering critical consciousness (CC) through professional development (PD) can be done in informal and formal spaces and can occur daily through planned and impromptu conversations amongst educators, students, and families. To address inequities in student outcomes, staff at Simón Bolívar Elementary has been engaged in traditional, monthly equity PD for several years, yet these efforts have led to little change in outcomes and school culture. Recognizing that the PD in its traditional format has not been sufficient to advance CC amongst staff and students, a team of school leaders set out to reimagine PD.
