ABSTRACT

Recent publications show a continued interest in the latest trends and approaches in English language education for improving practice or engaging in research in this field, but research often fails to reach practitioners in a way that can effectively inform their work. This chapter introduces the present volume, which combines practical examples of best practices with theoretical and research foundations, outlining its purpose, uniqueness and structure. The chapter focuses on presenting three key areas of English teaching and learning at the tertiary level covered in the book, highlighting contributions by the authors in curriculum design and pedagogy, use of technologies, and English in the disciplines. This chapter provides insights into current studies on best practices in English teaching and learning in higher education in Hong Kong, where English is the medium of instruction, with important implications for broader educational contexts around the world.
