ABSTRACT

This chapter provides insight into the process of racialization in the United States as it manifests in the experiences of Latinx migrants (both educators and youth). The authors define key concepts such as racialization, Latinx racialization, and how it manifests in relation to undocumented immigrants, in particular, both its limitations and opportunities for increasing racial equity, These dynamics are discussed in the context of the U.S. South – and the authors’ research with youth and educators there – as a case to understand the complicated nature of racialization. To this end, the authors conceptualize additional aspects important to understand racialization such as anti-Blackness and Latinidad to showcase the complexity and diversity of experiences of youth and educators in their research.
