ABSTRACT

How can we move toward more purposeful service learning practices that foster critical global citizenship? Gillman and Lavender, high school English teachers and service learning mentors, have taught in multiple international schools on four continents and have led service learning and global citizenship-oriented initiatives in the African and East Asian international school regions. In this chapter, the authors apply their experiences to three learning stories. These stories capture real global citizenship experiences from international school classrooms that span elementary, middle, and high school education. Gillman and Lavender unpack and evaluate these vignettes using critical lenses and consider ways to achieve deeper learning, intercultural understanding, equity, and more meaningful self-reflection and growth across classrooms and campuses.
