ABSTRACT

In what ways can anthropology support the training of graduate students for careers in community climate adaptation? This chapter discusses a new transdisciplinary master’s program that puts ethnographic methods at the center of a novel team-research-based strategy to address the multifaceted and complex problems associated with climate change. No single discipline or area of expertise is sufficient to address this global challenge. With our holistic approach and emphasis on local community context, anthropologists are well placed to work with engineers and other experts to train the new generation of climate adaptation professionals to help meet local needs and provide innovative ways of adapting to a changing climate. Drawing on a transdisciplinary, problem-centered approach, the Community Climate Adaptation degree program offers students from a range of different backgrounds a way forward to collaborate effectively with sociocultural practitioners, physical and environmental scientists, engineers, and policymakers.
