ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a workshop that establishes the aims of social justice comedy playwriting then uses improvisation activities to develop playwrights’ skills across three key areas of comedy. Body humor helps reduce over-thinking and highlight physical abandon as a form of resistance to social control. Mind humor helps writers develop subversive creativity through divergent thinking and linguistic play. Spirit humor unpacks the structural bones of modelling justice on stage. The activities are accompanied by examples of their functioning in well-known plays. The chapter concludes with practical guidance on managing the ethics and risks of social justice comedy.
