ABSTRACT

How we create theatre and playwriting has changed substantially. It is important to prepare for this new world where a playwright does not work alone at a computer, but actively engages with community. This chapter outlines the process for a non-traditional community-based collaborative approach to play creation, refined by facilitator Hope McIntyre during more than twenty years of practical work. This process has been used with various community groups, including criminalized women and youth in foster care. The method and exercises described are also useful for collaborative writing in playwriting classes, as well as for performance, devised theatre, and theatre for social change courses.
