ABSTRACT

Climate change is a significant and urgent challenge facing our global world. Finding entry points into massive comprehension-defying concepts, or what philosopher Timothy Morton terms “hyperobjects,” like the climate crisis can prove challenging. Embodied theatrical modes offer one fruitful area of exploration. This chapter explores several strategies oriented toward finding ourselves in relationship with the climate crisis in ways that can result in dramatic text, including personal storytelling and devising from source material. These methodologies allow students and practitioners to both center, and decenter, humanity in pursuit of fostering greater understanding, empathy, resilience, and desire to act while imagining radical climate just futures.
