ABSTRACT

This chapter provides applied-improv based exercises which can be used in playwriting to start the brainstorming process, write diverse characters with authentic voices, and check for cultural competence in the revision process, with a particular focus on race. Specific objectives include thinking freely while brainstorming, creating characters without specifying their race, gender, or age, considering how characters are perceived by others based on their appearance, discovering characters’ authentic voices, and exploring scenes from different cultural points of view.
