ABSTRACT

The Picture Project begins with the premise that movement, and how we move, makes meaning, and that by paying attention to how movement can stir up a host of emotions, experiences, and revelations we can write a character into existence. Inspired by Lucid Body Work, Viewpoints, Laban Analysis, and Rasa Boxes, The Picture Project is a jumping-off point for creating a larger piece through deep character exploration that encourages writers to experience themselves as performers and vice versa. The exercise relies on an embodied approach to creating character through explorations of movement qualities, body comportment, and physical relationship to space to reveal how someone who moves in a particular way experiences the world. This chapter will guide instructors, actors, and writers as they create characters and his/her/their worlds using the information and inspiration found in a photograph.
