ABSTRACT

Originally provoked by Chinese netizens policing the online activities of Thai netizens, the emergence of the “Milk Tea Alliance” has direct implications for democratic movements in Asia. The development of this nascent, digital-based political community suggests a growing transnational solidarity movement in Asia that is advocating a regional democratisation agenda. Within activists’ circles there is a growing appreciation of one another’s social movements, but such transnational solidarity remains largely symbolic. This chapter offers a preliminary analysis of this online phenomenon and considers the future of this digital imagined political community.
