How we got a permit to go; thoughts on Potsdam as we passed it in the train; East German trains; signs of much industrial activity; arrival in Halberstadt; we visit a village; we meet and talk with peasants; threats of forced collective farming; peasant reactions; comparison between land-holding systems in Germany, Poland and Russia; we visit the village church; we return to Halberstadt; reflection on the old town walls; we visit scenes of my wife’s childhood; shabbiness of everything; Communist propaganda; destruction of part of town by Allied bombers in war; friendly reception by the people we meet; no resentment about wartime bombing; great resentment at Communist régime; we visit the old cathedral; the two souls of old Germany; the partition of Germany today; will process of liberalization affect Communism in East Germany as it has in Poland and to some extent in Russia?
