ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces Embodied Transformational Therapy (ETT), an unprecedented, embodied approach to the psychotherapy of childhood and adult trauma developed by Joe Loizzo. It begins by acknowledging the inter-traditional sources of ETT in the confluence of contemporary analytic and behavioral approaches with the 15-century tradition of embodied Indic contemplative science and practice called the Optimal Integral Process (Skt. Anuttara-yoga-tantra). It then maps the alchemical framework of ETT by surveying its view of the baseline human condition, the healing journey and the final condition of fully embodied well-being. The baseline condition is defined in terms of ETT's quantum complexity model of the psyche, while its healing journey and transformational methodology are explored in light of their three phases: forming a congenial mentoring bond; restructuring traumatic perceptions and narratives of self and world; and realizing the transformation of embodied trauma into an embodied integration of prosocial well-being. The chapter concludes with unpacking the final condition of optimal well-being and presenting a case that exemplifies the method and its effectiveness.
