ABSTRACT

This study analyses the determinants of mask-wearing in 29 countries in 2020 using more than 400,000 survey responses. The results show considerable variance in the awareness of the importance of mask usage across countries. Citizens of Asian countries are far more likely to wear masks than citizens of Scandinavian countries. This study also reports that citizens of more democratic and prosperous countries are less likely to wear masks and that women are more likely to wear masks than men. This chapter contributes to the literature by reexamining anecdotes and previous research with statistical methods using more than 400,000 survey responses.
