ABSTRACT

This chapter aims at investigating the reasons behind negative attitudes towards the implementation of mask-wearing measures in Greek society. To this end, this study has conducted a systematic review of the most recent literature on mask-wearing attitudes and a critical review on dominant characteristics of modern Greek society. These reviews were followed by an examination of data derived from official Greek government announcements regarding mask-wearing measures during the pandemic and, finally, the depiction of mask-wearing attitudes through Greek digital media. This chapter attributes the negative attitude expressed by elements of Greek society towards the adaptation of mask-wearing measures to the following factors: (a) mistrust towards authority (governmental and scientific), (b) specific barriers related to this attitude and (c) the socio-historic origins of this approach.
