ABSTRACT

The chapter explores recent research findings regarding three analytics-informed and technology-enabled interventions scaled by Georgia State University. Over the past decade, Georgia State—a large, diverse, public university in Atlanta—has implemented adaptive learning, predictive-analytics-based proactive advising, and a chatbot enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) across its undergraduate student populations. In the process, it has seen dramatic increases in graduation rates and the elimination of equity gaps based on the students’ race, ethnicity, and income level. The chapter discusses the context for and motivations behind the adoption of these new systems, implementation processes, and results from a series of independent research studies, including randomized control trials (RCTs), which evaluate the impact of the interventions. The studies demonstrate that these approaches can result in significantly improved student outcomes and that they disproportionality benefit students from underserved backgrounds.
