ABSTRACT

From early discussions of the repression of women in the private sphere to calls for protection against algorithmic inferences about users’ demographics and delicate information from big data: This chapter provides an overview of the theoretical milestones in gender and privacy research that have accompanied the feminist movement, the most relevant empirical findings regarding gender differences, the debate about the persistent gender digital divide, and a brief reflection on the consequences of automatic gender categorization. A critical perspective on how research on gender and privacy is currently conducted, by relying on a binary conceptualization of gender as male or female, is provided, alongside suggestions for a fairer perspective and treatment.
