ABSTRACT

TVET is now a critical contributor in developing a skilled workforce for Malaysia. The Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013–2025) was launched to provide a comprehensive structure to transform TVET in Malaysia. TVET has now developed in tandem with recent innovations in the labour market. TVET is no longer associated with preparing workers for low-wage jobs, but it is now widely recognised as a crucial component that nurtures quality human capital development for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This industrialisation age requires more experienced, technically knowledgeable, and scientifically trained personnel to cope with the country’s transition from a labour-intensive to a capital-intensive era. This chapter will discuss in detail the history of TVET in Malaysia, focusing on reform efforts such as the Razak Report, the Education Act 1961, the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013–2025), and the Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Programme. Next, this chapter will illuminate the various educational pathways for TVET in Malaysia and its major TVET providers and organisers such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and others. Subsequently, this chapter highlights the importance of TVET, its challenges and several strategies to improve TVET in Malaysia.
