ABSTRACT

The commitment to equity holds a prominent place in the major Malaysian educational reform policy document titled “Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013–2025”. The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to “eliminate gender disparities and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, inclusive of persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations”. In this chapter, we draw upon the data available from the SDG index and dashboard, the official data available from Malaysian Ministry of education (MoE), and several other sources to provide an account of progress that has been made on equity issues in education and what more has to be done to meet the set goals. We will focus on gender equity and the disparities between educational attainment of urban and rural students and attempt to identify probable causes and the efforts of Malaysian Government to reduce these disparities.
