ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on the author's own experiences of doing ethnographic research in Muslim contexts. Considering his own experiences of field research, Alam states that the notion of field is not static but actively evolves as the research progresses. The field of research varies, at times even expands to sites which were not thought of earlier. Based on the work did in the backdrop of 9/11, he finds that the field, especially in the Muslim context, is prefigured in terms of perceptions. Alam also says that ethnography fits much into the Muslim contexts as it unlocks the life-worlds of them which is difficult to be captured by other methods of social inquiry.
