ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the Arabic and African diasporas through the underexplored Afro-Hispanic, Luso-Africans, and Mahjari experiences in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. It sheds light on issues related to Spain’s, Portugal’s, and Latin American’s racial, ethnic, and sexual boundaries. The book shows alternative views on Orientalism, along with new studies dealing with the Islamic world, the Maghreb, and sub-Saharan Africa. It highlights the historical, political, and cultural contexts in which Latin American identities have engaged in the debate about the precise nature of their Arab and African legacies. The book focuses on a new generation of female Equatoguinean authors who are directly engaging with the themes of sex and identity in the diaspora.
