ABSTRACT

Calls for greater representation of historically excluded communities in the healthcare workforce, investment in narratives of professionalism and the primacy of nursing, and reduction of wholeness, care, and science into competencies fall short of the possibility of freedom. These priorities maintain the bedrock of white supremacy and colonialism, leaving intact pervasive gatekeeping, silencing, and injustice. Harms manifest in every facet of nursing education. Simply voicing a commitment to diversity will neither shift the gaze, blueprint, nor topography of health professions education toward a future rooted in freedom. Rather than perpetuating and navigating harm, let us transform existing power structures to co-create a collective gaze across disciplines and institutions in order to heed the calls and solutions put forth by communities directly impacted and historically silenced. Let us situate ourselves and our actions within the scope of generations to come. We will outline the bedrock of white supremacy, interrogate proposed solutions, and envision education that uproots and eclipses the current violent systems.
