ABSTRACT
The Mahabharata in modern times has interested a lot of European scholars. Indologists and the general public get interested in this epic due to its size, stories, and philosophical presumptions present in the text. Madeleine Biardeau is a twentieth century Indologist who has written extensively on India and has also translated some texts from Sanskrit into French. She worked as the director of a team which presented the Ramayana of Valmiki in French. She has presented Mahabharata in a similar manner though it is not a team work, rather her personal presentation of the story of Mahabharata in French. On the title of Biardeau’s Mahabharata in French, the text has been presented as a ‘foundational text of Brahmanism’. The claim is to present this foundational text along with its interpretation. One may wonder what is meant by ‘interpretation’ in this context. Biardeau’s text is an important text in Indological studies of France.
