ABSTRACT

This chapter explores issues to do with the nature and existence of relations in the context of a theory of tropes. It argues (1) that relations most likely exist, (2) that what exists when a relation exists could be a trope, and (3) that if we want to avoid Bradley's regress, what exists when a relation exists is (even: must be) a trope. If the arguments set out in this chapter are correct, therefore, the existence of relations is a reason to think that trope theory is true.
