ABSTRACT

Along with high volume of economic migration in India, there also exists a substantial human movement due to natural disaster (drought, flood, tsunami, etc.), political problems (riots, terrorism, refugees, etc.), and development-induced displacement. Using the NSSO 64th round 2007–08-unit level data on migration, this chapter maps and evaluates the state-wise socio-economic profile of this migrant population. The detailed profiling includes the duration of stay, age group, gender, caste, religion, origin, and also inter- and intra-state movement of these groups. Overall, using this information, the study tries to frame forced migration pattern in the theoretical and historical context along with its social and economic consequences across Indian states.
