ABSTRACT

The men who assembled and took part in the riots at the Capitol brought with them manners of posture and costume that are emblematic of a particular performance of manhood and masculinity of a time and place in contemporary America. The habitus and adornment of these men stands in contrast to those of their avowed leader, Donald Trump. This chapter considers the performance of masculinities as historical and cultural tropes against the backdrop of masculinity studies and it addresses questions of male power in relation to white supremacy and toxic masculinity. As well, the chapter focuses in on several key moments during the Capitol riots where masculinities are on full display.
