ABSTRACT

In the months following the Capitol riot, narratives about the event—especially those concerning race—contained pieces of the truth but were often incomplete and at times deeply misleading. This chapter argues that aspects of the facts on the ground were more complex than what appeared at first glance. To explore these, this chapter directs attention to key areas of concern about the riots including the role of police, the role of the US military, and the role of white supremacists. The chapter goes on to provide critical assessment of the Democrat and conservative responses and outlines some key lessons for those involved in social justice struggles.
