ABSTRACT

The European Green Deal aims to facilitate sustainability transitions in the European Union and third countries as well as other world regions. The introduction outlines the importance of understanding actors’ action or lack of action towards sustainability transitions both at home and abroad concerning the implementation of the European Green Deal, thereby analysing drivers and barriers for change. The introduction sets out the analytical framework, defining the types of logics that actors follow, specifically the logic of consequences and the logic of appropriateness. This chapter explains how these logics relate to governance mechanisms and policy instruments. This enables the chapter to place the framework in relation to the European Green Deal and sustainability transitions before summarising each empirical chapter in the book.
