ABSTRACT

Until recently art was defined and analyzed within Western norms and values. While global views have penetrated many areas and topics of art history, modern art continues to be frequently perceived as an isolated Western development. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book covers the late 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century. It includes essays that reveal marginalized topics but also revisit the familiar modern art themes from a new perspective. The book is concerned with the period between the wars. It presents topics that further expand the story of modern art and confirm its global importance. The book discusses how modern African artists “negotiated blackness and African identities within global contexts of modern art”.
