ABSTRACT

Writing can achieve transformational wellbeing outcomes. The outstanding question is how. This chapter explores the nature of human engagement with the work that is Writing-for-wellbeing (WFW). It introduces the concept of writing the body to WFW theory and practice. Through the theoretical lenses of salutogenesis and polyvagal theory, the chapter aims to contribute to recognition for research and practice that assigns merit to the courage required to visit, and give language to, the internalities of the experiential body; to face, and take action on behalf of, the self on the page. The chapter introduces a concise definition for WFW, which has been missing from the field. This definition aims to facilitate communication between practitioners and medicalized systems and/or funding bodies. The chapter also offers insight into WFW work pioneered in the isolation of the Australian Outback, and online. This work was foundational to doctoral research undertaken by the author.
