ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focus on how it has impacted on India’s status or international standing in global politics. Though India’s ambitious launch of a strategy to raise its status in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic ran into considerable difficulty, its overall performance in status terms has been less catastrophic than might first appear. It assesses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on global politics generally and on status specifically. They examine the two dimensions of status separately. The military-strategic dimension of status has three main components: a state’s possession of the instruments of military power; a state’s position in major institutions pertaining to world order; and how it responds to threats to its security. The prestige gained or lost by India in the context of the pandemic has to be viewed in the wider perspective of its image generally.
