ABSTRACT

The epilogue proposes “the ethics of care” to alleviate the suffering and vulnerabilities caused by unsustainable urbanisation of the interconnected world. Longing for sustainable urbanisation is naturally a laudable goal. Currently, Goal 11 and Goal 6 of the SDGs are designed to fulfil this aspiration. However, longing is not a sufficient condition for the achievement of sustainable urbanisation. Longing is like an ideal, which remains different from actual achievements. Longing is like compassion, which does show caring attitude of a person to assuage the suffering of the other person or group but does not involve appropriate actions to actually alleviate the suffering. In contrast to compassion, kindness involves actions undertaken to alleviate the suffering. Compassion and kindness both are foundational to the ethics of care.
