ABSTRACT

This visual essay reproduces ten black-and-white photographs from a more comprehensive exhibition first mounted at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in the summer of 1997. The exhibition was inspired by my great-uncle Giovanni, who led me on the visual journey recorded here to explore the roots of my Italian heritage. His sister Maria, my grandmother, left her ancient Sicilian hometown of Limina with my grandfather Filippo in the 1920s to create a new life in America. Their sacrifices represent the selfless determination of millions of Italian immigrants who helped to build this country. I dedicate An Italian Journey to my grandparents for giving me the rich gift of my Italian identity.
