ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly affected every dimension of life around the world. Prior to the development of vaccines, the primary defence strategies were in the domain of human behaviour rather than medical science or pharmaceuticals. With these procedures being implemented, many workplaces began to introduce distancing through remote working in employees’ homes. For jobs requiring people to be on site and to be interacting with others, physical barriers, personal protective equipment (PPE), and scheduling minimised contact with the potential for transmitting the virus. This introduction provides a summary of the book, providing insight into what each chapter offers when it comes to our understanding of “burnout,” especially in these unprecedented times.
