ABSTRACT

While the role of sleep for physical as well as mental health is considered fundamental for every human being, quantity and quality of sleep are very sensitive to changing environmental and intraindividual conditions. This chapter introduces key characteristics of ‘good sleep’ and how they are assessed. Moreover, it shows how they are related to daytime functioning and, at the same time, the influence of daytime activities and organisational factors on subsequent sleep periods will be considered. Typical life stressors and developmental challenges throughout the lifespan will be addressed. Furthermore, sleep management strategies are presented. Hereby, behavioural, and mental interventions will be emphasised. Practical and scientific implications will be provided.
