ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how forms of analysis can be applied and built on. Images can be, both, the object and the means of analysis; revealing facets of social issues being considered. Analysis is not an afterthought, but the foundation of research; initial work examines the obvious immediate meanings of images and codes the context in which they are seen, setting the scene for more in-depth critical analysis. Semiotic, discourse and forms of historical analysis approaches are highlighted showing a movement from internal dynamics of the image to its broader origins and socio-political consequences. By combining various forms of visual analysis, a ‘thick description’ of a phenomenon might be achieved. Multiple methods of research can be employed, gathering relevant images reveals the dominant discourses, and the historical relationships between archive images and texts can be linked to current local economic and social dynamics. New digital tools can also be useful for collecting and displaying these relationships.
