ABSTRACT

In this chapter we show how the source document (SD) property metalanguage, together with the issue metalanguage, can be used for pedagogical purposes. We designed a pedagogical session, in which a part of the SD property metalanguages was used, and carried out an experiment that simulated the session. Based on the experiment, we examined the role and effect of the SD property metalanguage within the session design, from the following points of view:

How can the SD property metalanguage be used for analysing and diagnosing learners’ translations and their characteristics?

How can the SD property metalanguage be deployed for promoting discussions about translations in concrete terms?

How does the learner’s awareness of SD properties promoted by the use of the metalanguage change their translation performance?

Together they amount to demonstrating the feasibility of a case session with empirical data and concrete use of the metalanguages.
