ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the metalanguages we have developed and their relationship with translation activities, mainly commercial, normally carried out by translation service providers (TSPs). Such translations typically require the involvement of multiple actions and actors, constituting a process through which the final translation is produced. The actions or subprocesses taken by responsible actors within the project, as stipulated in ISO 17100, consist of modules such as a client-TSP contract, brief definition, project management, translation, revision, reviewing, and quality assurance. Through metalanguages, we achieve a better understanding of the processes and actions that result in translation. This chapter thus provides an overview of the translation process in commercial environments. After defining translation in terms of its function and process, we discuss how our metalanguage connects and contributes to descriptive translation studies (Toury, 1995) and functionalist approaches (Vermeer, 1989/2000). The variety of actors involved in the translation process is also discussed in detail. Then, we introduce ISO 17100, which we consider our starting point for defining the translation process.
