ABSTRACT

This chapter develops translation strategies as a metalanguage that can support translation education and practice. Specifically, we validate the systematicity and coverage to meet our criteria for a set of metalanguage terms. We draw on the translation strategies developed by Chesterman (2016), refining them for English-to-Japanese translation. Responding to the linguistic distance between English and Japanese and the challenges this brings about, we introduce a new concept of “unpolished translation” to enhance the applicability of the strategies. This corresponds to the idea that translation strategies are necessary solutions to achieve a proper translation, a departure from literal translation, and, therefore, we expect the main application of strategies to be used for explicit instruction in pedagogical settings.
