ABSTRACT

Coaching has changed and evolved significantly in the last ten years. Coaching today is highly dynamic and increasingly demanding, for coaches are no longer viewed simply as teachers of the sport but as developers of people. It is clear from both the perspective of the researcher and the practitioner that the way sports coaches develop their practice and become more expert has evolved significantly in the past decade. Traditional coach education programs have typically provided formal structured learning situations. The coach education shifts significantly from knowledge transfer, to coach centered facilitation, to behavioral change. Program monitoring and evaluation are crucial and too frequently forgotten or ignored. Coach Development has come a long way over the last 20 years and, like coaching, is continuing to evolve and change as the people draw on best practice in the field and learn from more applied research.
