ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors provide several case studies illustrating international systems of coach development, which provide a global snapshot of the influence of context and culture. Coaching qualifications are currently administered by the Japan Sport Association (JSPO) which was renamed from Japan Sports Association and Japan Amateur Athletic Association, the first president of which was the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano. Coaching in Brazil has been a profession since 1998. There is no voluntary coaching in the country, and anyone who wants to work as a coach must hold the university degree in Physical Education. Despite promoting the necessary changes to qualify the preparation of coaches in Physical Education programs in Brazil, there is still a general focus on the preparation of coaches with few specificities for different sports. The US has a long history of documenting the responsibilities of sport coaches. The chapter presents a snapshot of the current state of coach development around the globe.
