ABSTRACT

Coaches are generally knowledgeable about their sport, the skills, and drills or Xs and Os. In both coach education and development programmes, difficulties usually arise around the non-technical aspects of coaching; the how-to-coach skills. Coach development opportunities in various forms are provided by sport organisations, higher education institutions, private companies, at local, national, and international level, to coaches who deal with novice athletes up to the high-performance professional levels of all sports and disciplines. Coach developers have been identified as “the most important link in the chain” of coach education and development. This chapter deals with the importance and main characteristics of KA as applied to the work done by coach developers in their different roles across a range of organisations. KA has been shown as a powerful tool to identify the knowledge needed by coaches and coach developers, as well as the gaps that need to be addressed.
