ABSTRACT

The term 'emancipation of women' has been applied to so wide a variety of social, political and ideological attitudes that it has become one of the most ill-defined terms in modern terminology. Against the situation outlined above the government which came to power in July 1968 had to work out effective programmes to achieve its objectives: the elimination of differences between various sections of women and the enhancement of the process of women's emancipation. Legislation was introduced to ensure that Iraqi women enjoy equal opportunity of employment, equal pay and equal chances of promotion in all fields of work without exception. A prominent role in this programme is played by the General Federation of Iraqi Women. The discusses the long distance which Iraqi women have covered towards the achievement of complete emancipation. The Ba'thist revolution needed women as a basic potentiality, while women needed the revolution as a means of liberation.
