ABSTRACT

Children should be taught from the beginning to form letters in the most economical and logical way in order to progress easily to a joined script. In trying to change their own writing style, teachers can gain a small insight into the difficulties children have when trying to re-learn a kinaesthetic skill. Some children have difficulty with sequencing events when telling stories and for them the story needs to be broken down into separate and distinct stages. A visual representation of the sequence helps to reinforce the concept of the logical development necessary in a story. The children can be encouraged to see the need for a format that everyone can easily read and the word processor is ideal for providing as many copies as necessary. Helping children to see themselves as writers can be the most difficult but eventually the most rewarding task for teachers.
