ABSTRACT

The aim of the chapter is to examine Kraków using the concept of a creative city, as elaborated by a number of researchers, including Charles Landry (2000) and Richard Florida (2002). It emphasises the role of culture, the creative industries, cultural infrastructure, and the “creative class” in a discussion about the key resources of a city. We will look at Kraków from four different angles: creative capital, the cultural and creative industries, cultural and scientific infrastructure, as well as the urban quality of life. The analysis will be accompanied by a presentation of Kraków’s positions in two creative city indices (the EU’s Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor and Landry and Hyams’s Creative Cities Index) and its activities as the UNESCO Creative City of Literature.
