ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the part of Kraków’s cultural policy that treats events as resources for the development of the city. Using the theoretical approach proposed by Greg Richards and Robert Palmer (2010), it presents the path that Kraków has taken from being a mere city of events, to being an eventful city of the 21st century. Starting with the European mega-events of the European Cultural Month 1992 and the European City of Culture 2000, Kraków developed a vision of a “city of festivals” that has been consistently implemented using instruments such as the Kraków Festival Office, which coordinates the event ecosystem of the city. Today, Kraków is a city where almost 80 festivals, over 8,400 MICE events, and 240 mass events take place every year, and one that has a determined approach to benefit from them on many socio-economic levels.
