ABSTRACT

“Archetypal nonviolence” is a form of social and cultural activism and a response to the violence from which it arises. Just as nonviolent social action addresses the philosophical and metaphysical idea of equality and freedom for all, so in individual analysis, nonviolence is a response to the oppressive inner other, separating one from aspects of oneself. Nonviolent activism in analysis opens the path to restoring this inner union. The shadow side of nonviolence is developed in connection to classical psychoanalytic concepts such as participation mystique, the sadomasochism in hatred, and projective identification.
