ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the performance of the existing coastal buffers in mitigating the cyclonic effects in coastal Bangladesh. Cyclones are frequent occurrences in Bangladesh, and they lash the coastal zone with destructive wind speeds and storm surges. In this chapter, the authors have presented the mitigating effects of the existing coastal buffers in Bangladesh based on their study from historical data records. The soft engineering methods often require a large area to be effective – which can often be difficult for densely populated countries with space stress. However, in this chapter, it has been shown that even the less dense, natural, or artificial elongated mangrove strips can significantly reduce the destructive effects. This represents an efficient and cost-effective way forward for coastal management in resource-constrained countries.
